Del Rio, Texas is the most populous city in the state of Texas and was once a major port on the Gulf of Mexico. The city is located in Hudspeth County, just south of Wichita Falls. The population of Del Rio reached 329,624 as of July 1, 2010. It lays claim to being "the fastest-growing city in Texas" and has seen an increase in its workforce since 2000. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Del Rio were Native American traders who traveled along the coast from Kansas down to Louisiana before coming ashore in present-day central Mexico and then moving inland. By 1836, Spanish colonists had established a fort at San Felipe de Alvarado on the mouth of the Brazos River near modern day Del Rio. In 1837, Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Uto-Aztecan Indians living east of the Mississippi River removed to reservations under orders from his successor Bernardo Madero. Thisforced many Texans to move into what is now Hudspeth County and nearby ranchlands during this period. The largest concentration of Texan settlers occurred around Whatcom Creek where smallpox epidemics decimated local groups in 1848-49 and 1861 followed by other diseases such as small pox that struck more heavily here than anywhere else in Texas during that time frame In 1865, after much debate within Congress over whether to annex California or not following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, President Johnson decided to annex California instead which led to a large influx of Hispanics into Texas during this time frame including many Mexicans who had already settled in eastern New Mexico and Arizona prior to that annexation decision
