Del Rio is an incorporated city in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The city's name comes from the Spanish word "del Rio", meaning "the river" or "stream". The first people to inhabiting what is now Del Rio contacted Native Americans in pre-historic times. They were Coast Miwok and Chiricahua Maya who traded with these groups for goods and services. By 1836, settlers had arrived in what is now Del Rio after traveling down the Red River via Austin and San Antonio rivers. Many of these newcomers came from Kentucky and Tennessee because those were the only two states that offered land to Texans during this time period. In 1837, a group of Mexican landowners led by José Hernandez donated 640 acres (2 km²) to be used as a town site on the banks of the Trinity River. The town was named for José de la Torre y Balbuena, one of their owners along with Manuel Francisco Miranda y Mirabal and Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna y Matheson. In 1840, when Texas became part of America, Texas Rangers called Fort Myer located east of present day Del Rio "Therosa Station" in honor of Major General David improper Herrera Yoakum's victory over Mexico at Palo Alto on April 6th that year. In 1849–50 - about one year before Houston was founded - three men named John Wesley Powell set out from Albuquerque Vermont on horseback to explore new water routes into Central America through El Paso County near today's Ciudad Juárez Airport in north central Mexico City across country (now near downtown El Paso). On July 16th they discovered Yellow Creek which they named for American gold miner John Wesley Powell while he was exploring it further upriver some 20 miles northeast near modern day Lubbock TX within easy walking distance of where today’s US 23 intersects Mexican Federal Highway 10 just southwest of IH 10 bridge crossing over creek known then as Clear Fork Springcreek & later Browns Ferry Ford Rd., Today’s Nacogdoches TX situated approximately 4½ miles due WSW corner FM 921E belonging also to current city limits just beyond abandoned Brushy Springs rancho/farmstead established about 1800 yr ago by Pecos Apache Chief Vicente Romero Ballesteros owner+ occupants next door to Rancho el Rincon situating approx ½ mile SE corner Ranchero Adobe built 1785 by Juan Bautista Méndez Cosío head tenant+ occupant facing SW end apx 12 rods NE side RR #5 west bank below stream inside Mesa Verde Preserve

The City of Del Rio was founded on November 15, 1836 by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. It grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s as a result of its strategic location at the crossroads of two major wagon trails: the Santa Fe Trail and the Texas Road. The first post office in Del Rio was established in 1838. By 1860, there were over 1,000 residents. The city reached its peak in population around 1880 with 2,500 people. However, economic development declined during the late 1800s as railroads expanded into central Texas and cotton became increasingly popular as a crop. In 1925,Del Rio's mayor resigned after admitting to bribery in connection with a public Works projects of his predecessor. In 1933, Mayor Manuel Diaz won approval to annex part of Dallas County which would give Del Rio an edge in competition for annexation requests from Dallas City Limits. The annexation led to increased population growth and wealth within the city limits until World War II when oil exploration began to take center stage and production slowed down overall in the area. From 1945-1948, Del Rio experienced a period of rapid growth due to wartime industrialization that created new jobs across many industries including trucking and manufacturing. This period is often referred to as "the renaissance" because of this rapid growth but it also faced several challenges such as high crime rates and social tension caused by overwhelming postwar prosperity without corresponding social progress or job opportunities for returning citizens
Del Rio, Texas was founded in 1836 by Antonio L. Del Rio, a Mexican landowner and politician who served as the governor of New Mexico from 1846 to 1850. The town became an important center for cattle drives and cotton production, and its location on the River del Rio made it a popular destination for travelers. In 1861, when Texas seceded from the United States, Del Rio became part of the new Mexican state of Veracruz. Today, Del Rio is a small city with a population of around 507 people.
