The community was named for General James Hogg (1792-1871), a hero of the Mexican–American War and a member of the Texas House of Representatives. Hogg's grandson, John A. Hogg, donated land to make room for a post office and school in 1881. In 1902, the name change to Deer Park after General James Custer's death at Battle Creek Indian Reservation near present day Fort Worth. The first store was built on Main Street in 1903 by Wm. Fenton & Son grocery storekeepers and it served as deer PARK'S only grocery until 1924 when Mrs. Gertrude Sitton opened her own store which became known as "Mrs.'s Store" until 1955 when it closed because of budget constraints within park district #2 during Jim Bowie's administration as mayor In 1954 an addition to Mrs.'s Store was built on East Second Street which served as both the original school house and post office until 1969 when it burned down In 1979 another addition to Mrs.'s Store building was added that became known as "The Great Hall" due to its space being larger than any other structure within park district #2 during that time period

The town was named after the deer that were present when the deerskinning operation began in nearby Fort Worth. Deer Park had a population of about 100 people at the time it was founded. In 1916, Big Spring voters passed an ordinance allowing for beer sales within city limits and also authorized the erection of a drinking fountain within City Limits to commemorate Lone Star Beer Company's founding in 1913 at nearby Glenwood Springs. That year also saw the opening of Deer Park High School which became one of Midland County's largest high schools with over 1,000 students enrolled by 1930. During World War II, Deer Park was home to both the U S Navy's oil rigs (1942-1945) and Naval Air Station Enterprise (1945-1946). During Hurricane Harvey damage assessments published by Texas A&M University on August 29th and October 2nd 2018; approximately 95% of all residences were without power due to staying flooded throughout most areas but some neighborhoods such as Deer Park where homes are unincorporated have access to power now; many local businesses closed until late September due lack of business licenses or insurance; many residents are still waiting for permits from FEMA so they can begin repairs/updates to their homes; many roads have been impacted including main streets providing only one way access into or out of certain neighborhoods - making it difficult for people who live close to rivers/creek mouths etc., to get water or food; numerous churches have reopened with help from volunteers - this includes Strawn Baptist Church which lost its entire congregation when their building collapsed following Harvey
