Deer Park is a small town in Texas, located about 25 miles (40 km) north of Austin. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Deer Park is one of the oldest towns in Travis County and has been in existence since 1851. The name "Deer Park" comes from a hunting ground near the community which was used by Native Americans for deer hunting. The town also donated food to various military units stationed in Texas and Louisiana. After hostilities ended, many of the original residents left for various reasons including job shortages or changes in marital status within their families. Some returned later while others relocated to other parts of Texas or Oklahoma after experiencing difficult economic times during their absence. In 1978, deer park incorporated as a city under its own government with jurisdiction over all unincorporated areas within its borders except those lying within Travis County proper; this event marked the first time that any municipality had exercised full municipal rights within Travis County since it was formed from portions of Bowie County following annexation by Austin in 1876). He also built a log cabin which is still standing today. In 1839, Deeds of Sale were issued for land between US 90 and FM 1492. This area became known as Deer Park Township and was located east of US 90 between FM 1492 and I-10. In 1881, Waco Electric Railway was completed from Dallas to Houston and it crossed through Deer Park along FM 1492/US 90. The village of Deer Park began to grow around this time as people commute to work or live in nearby cities. By 1890, there were over 100 residents living in Deer Park Township proper with businesses such as grocery stores, gas stations, bakeries, churches etc., making it one of the largest villages in Texas at that time. In 1907, the first school building was constructed in town by J E Fenton & Sons under contract from Lubbock Independent School District #2 (later Red River Valley Independent School District). It served as the district's elementary school until 1955 when it closed due to budget constraints within Lubbock ISD #2 itself! The school building sat derelict until 1984 when it was purchased by Driscoll Family Foundation Incorporated who restored it into use as a museum!
