Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended Mexican–American War and ceded Mexico most of West Texas to Great Britain[9][10]. After several years Spanning over 12 miles long and up to six feet deep,[11], Lake Ray Hubbard was created by damming Neches River near present day Irvington to create an impoundment that would provide water for cattle ranchers across much of central Texas[12][13]). As early as 1848 Indian traders were active in Commerce City trading goods with Indians along Buffalo Bayou located just east side Interstate 10 within 100 yards (91 m)[14]). A group led by Nathan Bedford Forrest began raids into nearby Kaufman County during this time period raiding homes, livestock, crops and heads of jailed innocent Texans[15]; some citizens did not believe Forrest until after his death when evidence surfaced linking him to these events.[16][17].
