The town was founded in 1881 by John Crowley and his wife Eliza Waddell Crowley. The first post office in Crowley was established on December 12, 1881. John Crowley served as the postmaster for the town until he died on October 17, 1903. His widow Eliza Waddell Crowley continued to serve as postmaster until her death on November 5, 1923. That year, the town received its present name from General James Ewell Polk who had been installed as Commander of all Union forces in Texas on October 20, 1877. In 1902, John Mosely opened a general store and blacksmith shop located east of town near what is now Midland Boulevard
