The first post office was established in 1841. The present day community was founded on November 24, 1882 by Horace Waddell and Orville Pyle with the name of "Waco." It reverted to its original name on January 1, 1923 when it became part of Midland County. Crowley is home to two high schools: Midland Hills and Wiley-Langston High Schools. They are both public schools that serve students from mainly Midland and Webb counties as well as some parts of Houston County outside of the city limits. In addition to its public schools, Crowley also has one private school: Atherton School which serves students from east Dallas County and portions of Collin and Duncan Counties within Midland County only. TheMidlands Business Journal reports that Crowley may soon be losing its identity as an agricultural center due to changes in policy at the local government level regarding land use inSTEPS (Texas State Legislature's program for rural development).
