Crowley, Texas is located in Crowley County, Texas. It was founded on July 4th, 1879 by General C.F. Smith and settlers including A.J. Caldwell and Wm. Halsey. The town became a ghost town after the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1887. Today, there are no active businesses or residents in Crowley; all that remain are the few remaining buildings from the old community and a few stray cowboys roaming the landscape looking for food or a place to rest their horses during the hot summer days. It wasn't until 1886 that railroad construction reached Crowley and then only temporary housing/ stores were built until 1889 when permanent structures were erected including a Post office, storerooms for cattle and mail delivery, blacksmith shop, hotel and other necessary amenities for early Crowley citizens who had taken up arms against Mexican invaders In 1907 an addition to The Ranch was opened called The Gables which served as home to local ranchers while they awaited shipment of live stock from central Texas via wagon train down through the canyon country between Canyonlands National Park and San Angelotexas On October 14th 1906 three gunmen stormed into The Gables killing one man (Hugh McCullough) before turning their weapons on themselves This incident has been cited as one of America's first mass shootings

The name Crowley comes from a ranch that was located there before the town was founded. The first post office in Crowley opened on July 10, 1881. It served as Pecos County's only station until January 1913 when it amalgamated with Hudspeth County. The first building in Crowley was a log cabin which burned down in 1902. A new log cabin was built and dedicated on December 12, 1903 by J.D. Ladd and Gertrude Aiken Hite after they lost their home in a fire that same year. On November 15th 1907, Democrat James Murchison was elected Mayor of Crowley after winning an open seat against incumbent Republican John Wreathman by 2,661 votes out of 3,811 cast during the general election held on November 4th 1907. He served one term and then resigned to run for Governor of New Mexico in 1909 which he won but returned to Hudspeth County two years later when his term ended at age 30 due to natural causes
