Crowley, Texas is a small town located in Webb County, Texas. The population was 2,971 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Crowley was founded in 1879 by Mormons who come from Utah and New Mexico. After the LDS church's expulsion fromUtah, some of these Mormon settlers started to move westward and found a land grant on which they built their first home in 1881 called Crowley Creek Ranch. In 1902, the name changed to Crowley Township and then Crowley Place in honor of Harry Houdini, famous magician and mentalist. In 1907, following World War I when America experienced a period of economic growth, Crowley became an incorporated municipality with its own government. In 1960, residents voted to secede from Webb County due to disagreements over racial discrimination throughout county government. As a result of this vote, Crowley became an independent city within Webb County with its own mayor and councilors. Today it remains one of the most diverse cities in Texas with people from all walks of life living together without any type of discrimination or segregation

Crowley, Texas is a town located in Johnson County, Texas. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Crowley is home to Crowley Junior High School and the Crowley Volunteer Fire Department. The first settler in Crowley was James A. Crowell who came to the area in 1868. In 1880, US presidential candidate Grover Cleveland traveled through the area and visited Crowley on his way to Austin. In 1886, an oil well was drilled in nearby Potter County and a boomtown began to form around it; however, this boom quickly died out as oil prices collapsed during the 1890s. In 1903, John Witherspoon erected a cabin on land that now forms part of town limits. Later that year, McKinney Oil Company leased land from Witherspoon for an refinery and community began to form around it; however, this development also fell victim to economic recession during the early 1900s. The only other permanent resident of Crowley until after World War II were two men who operated a sawmill and gristmill in neighboring Potter County: Caryl Hodges (1910-2001) and her husband Vernon Hodges (1911-1996). Crowley first achieved notoriety when Houdini made an appearance there on October 15th1920 when he performed his escape from prison using some ropes that had been smuggled into America by Andy Rooney (1907-1984). However,Houdini's visit has generally been downplayed in recent history due largely to its rarity rather than any great significance it may have held for Crowley itself. On May 25th 1952 cowboy Gene Autry (1897-1982) set up shop at what is now Harry's Bar & Grill in Cody while performing his nationally syndicated show at one of Cody's many high school stadiums; however not all aspects of Cowboy Culture would be brought over from Hollywood which included elements like rancid steak being served inside Harry's restaurant thereby earning Hades' Hellfire perhaps one of Cody's most famous trademarks! During prohibition much of Cody's social life revolved around hosting "bootleg" bar meetings where people could purchase alcohol without having their names put on file with law enforcement officials! Some believe that such activities may have helped keep tax revenues low as organized crime became more entrenched following repeal of prohibition
Crowley was founded in 1854 by John F. Crowley, a Texas landowner and Methodist preacher. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s, thanks to its location on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1865, Crowley became the county seat of Hudspeth County, after being selected as the site for the new county by then-President Abraham Lincoln. The county courthouse was completed in 1869, and soon afterward Crowley developed into a prosperous agricultural center. In 1881, Crowley attracted national attention when it hosted what is considered to be the first live television broadcast from a U.S.-based station. It also emerged as an important cultural center during this period, with many prominent people from across America visiting or living in Crowley. In 1930, financial difficulties led to local business closures and social unrest that eventually led to violence against residents by elements of organized crime. However, things quickly normalized after Crowley's incorporation as a city in 1935.
