The town of Crowley, Texas was named after the first settler in the area, James Crowley, who arrived in 1836. The town and its surrounding areas were originally part of Brownsville County. In 1875, the county was divided into two parts, one including Crowley and the other including Midland. The old county seat for Crowley remainded in Midland until it was moved to Sherman in 1915.

Crowley's most notable claim to fame may be its association with New Orleans occultist and ceremonial magician Aleister Crowley. One of Crowley's many homes, The Abbey, still stands today and is used as a museum and research center on Crowley's life and work. Located on White Sands Boulevard just outside of town proper, it also features an exhibit about Crowley's life and work. In addition to its museum aspect, The Abbey has been home to several conferences related to the occult over the years including one run by the Academy of Occult Arts in 2006 which attracted some top names in the field such as Pennywise (from Stephen King’s IT), Gerald Gardner (the creator of Tarot readings for public events) and France Hebert (founder of Oris Major). Another influential figure in local culture is musician Bud Powell who formed his own band called Thelonious Monk And His All-Stars there in the early 1960s. After hearing about Powell from friend Rufus Thomas – another devotee of Crowley – Hudspeth County Commissioners voted unanimously to rename their main street "Bud Powell Way" after him in 2001.

The Crowley, Texas History Museum is located in the small town of Crowley, Texas. It was founded in 1978 by the late Don Gray and his wife, Joan. The museum is open to the public from 9am to 4pm every day except Mondays. Admission is free for all visitors. Crowley became a small community when cattle ranchers decided to move their herds to new pastures in the area in the 1880s. By 1900, Crowley had a school and some businesses including a post office and grocery store. In 1938, Hurricane Allen caused extensive damage to Crowley and most of nearby towns. The museum reopened in 1990 as part of an effort to help restore communities hit hard by natural disasters. In 2013, Don Gray passed away at age 90 after many years of service to the museum. Joan Gray continues her leadership role as president and CEO of the museum with support from her husband’s estate. As part of its centennial year celebration, the museum plans several events throughout 2014 that include exhibits on local history, educational programs for kids and seniors, concerts and field trips for students.
