Crowley is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,461 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Lawrence metropolitan area. Crowley was founded in 1881 by John A. Crowley and named after his ranch near present-day Crowley Lake in east-central Tarrant County. The town was originally laid out as a two-mile square, but it grew to four miles due to its position between two major railroad lines and its access to multiple water supplies. By 1915, Crowley had developed into an agricultural community with more than seventy businesses and over one thousand residents. In that year, the first school opened in the town--a common schoolhouse on Second Street that served local farms until 1955 when it became the first building built in what would become the downtown area of Crowley. In 1925, Crowley hosted its first rodeo event and since then has been billed as "the arena for country music." In 1935, the city of Amarillo annexed parts of Crowley Township so that it could provide better services for the community's citizens; this annexation led to a growth in commercial activity within Crowley which helped make it one of Amarillo's most economically vibrant communities during that time. By 1951, Crowley had reached its current size with a population of 2,871 people thanks to an influx of refugees from World War II who arrived via Interstate 20 and other routes. The development of nearby standard-sized towns such as Odessa (to the east) and Waco (to the north) caused some consolidation within Crowley during these years; however, most business operations continued intra-town rather than expanding outward into neighboring communities.
