The first settler in Crowley was George Munday and his wife Margaret who arrived on horseback from Scotland in 1827. The town was named for John Crowley, a Morse code operator stationed at Fort Worth during World War I who died of pneumonia while on leave in 1918. The oil industry played a significant role in the early development of Crowley. Oil production began at the nearby Pecos Well in 1923 and until 1957, Crowley served as the largest refinery east of Houston. In 2006, however, Spirit Energy Corporation closed its refinery after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to high operating costs and competition from new energy sources such as fracking and wind power generation. Today, many local businesses remain open thanks to an area that has been designated as one of the most business friendly regions in Texas according to Forbes Magazine. The economy is still buoyed by oil production but also by other sectors such as retail (which continues to grow), health care (especially with Memorial Hermann Hospital now responsible for more than 50% of outpatient medical services) and professional services such as law enforcement and accounting

Crowley, Texas is a small farming town in Hudspeth County, Texas, located just east of Austin. The community was founded in 1872 by John Crowley and his family. The population was 2,500 at the 2010 census. John Crowley's father had emigrated from Ireland in 1849 and John Crowley himself had been born in 1856. After studying law at the University of Texas at Austin, Crowley became a lawyer in Hudspeth County. He married Adele Noyes in 1875 and they had two children: John Jr., who later became an attorney and United States Senator from New Mexico; and Adaline (a daughter of businessman George H.W. Bush). In 1895, after years of service as justice of the peace for Hudspeth County, Crowley was elected to the Houston City Council where he served until 1899 when he resigned to become a judge on the Texas Supreme Court. In 1907, Crowley purchased 640 acres (2 km2) near present-day Crowley TX from banker James Wirtz for $5 per acre ($1/km²). Thereafter he began developing it into what is now known as Harry Potter Ranch State Park which opened to the public on November 15, 1912. At its peak occupancy that year there were over 100 ranch employees working on 15 miles (24 km) of trails covering 6 square miles (20 square kilometers). Today only about 10% remains of this original estate including employee housing dating back to 1912-1914 with some notable structures still extant such as the original farmhouse which still stands today adjacent to Harry Potter Ranch State Park Museum & Research Center. The land around Harry Potter Ranch State Park has also been used for other purposes such as residential development beginning around 1960s with many families moving here during that time period looking for rural living opportunities outside city limits while still being within commuting distance to Austin or Dallas etc.; however much less exists remaining today than when first developed due to various factors including increasing populationdensity within urban areas since then while also extensive use by state government agencies etc.. The largest intact remnant is Harry Potter's House which still stands today next door to museum entrance
