Crowley is a town in Potter County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2000 census. It has since fallen to 914. Crowley was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1881 and named for General Israel Chase Crowley, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War. The town's first post office opened in 1885. The first Storey & Griggs store opened in 1886 and the first Crowley Hardware store opened in 1888. In 1899, Crowley incorporated as a town with a total population of 362 people. The first courthouse was built on Main Street in 1901 and when it burned down in 1957, new construction began on the present courthouse which completed in 1960. In 1909, local residents organized what became known as the Texas Revolution Committee to support Woodrow Wilson's presidential campaign against incumbent Taft. One of its primary tasks was to raise money for Wilson's campaign through bake sales and car sales among other methods. In 1920 members of the committee founded Crowley Baptist Church which still operates today. In 1925, John Witherspoon purchased land east of Crowleys center from Cornelius Hogg for $1,000 cash and began building what would become known as Witherspoons Rancho de las Pulgas (Witherspoons Ranch). Today this ranch house still stands within Crowleys limits and is used as a museum providing insight into ranch life during that time period
