Compton's grandson Brigham Young purchased the lands from the Apache and laid out what would become Crowley on a large ranch stretching along the Trinity River. Crowley has an active Latter-day Saint community that supports temple worship and other religious activities as well as various industry businesses including five schools and two churches serving local populations ranging from children to seniors. A number of significant historical landmarks are located within town limits including Masonic Lodge No. 5 (dedicated to Orson Hyde Crowley), which overlooks downtown; First Baptist Church (built in 1911); Liberty Hall (dedicated to John Wesley Powell), which served as headquarters for many early oil exploration operations; and Pogue Ranch House (now a museum).
