The town grew rapidly during the 1850s as settlers arrived from central Mexico to find land that had been reserved for Mexican Americans by order of President James Polk over President Andrew Johnson’s objections. During the early years of Corsicanas growth, it was a remote outpost on an isolated stretch of prairie surrounded by harsh country hillsides covered with thorny cactus bushes and oak trees – perfect conditions for livestockraising operations given that there were no rivers or streams nearby to provide water or milk for sheep or cows. In 1859, however, when western Texas came under Ulysses S Grant’s administration as part of Reconstruction following the American Civil War, local politicians persuaded him to create a railroad through Corsicanas ranchlands so that goods could be shipped into Mexico City via San Antonio; this helped increase trade between Plano and Tamaulipas while providing new opportunities for agriculture hereabouts (the opening up of new markets led to increased prices for beef). With rail transportation came increased business opportunity for merchants such as Humble Hardware store proprietor John Waddell whose assets attracted buyers from all over western Colorado Springs with their 4-year-old heifer “ Trigger” which soon became known throughout much of northeast Texas as “the cowtown wonder” because she not only fetched high prices at auction but also produced more than any other cow ever sold within our borders: $2 per head! By 1850, Corsicana had a school, store and two churches. In 1865 it became county seat for Hardin County and remained so until 1907 when Carthage took over as county seat. In 1899, work began on building what would become known as "The Square" in downtown Corsicana. The square was completed in 1902 and remains an important part of town today. This project was funded by local citizens who believed that having a central place where people could congregate would promote economic development within the community. During World War II, Corsicana played a significant role in helping to provide food for military troops stationed overseas. Many businesses in town donated goods or services to support this effort such as selling gasoline or selling coffee beans to soldiers stationed abroad. In 1951, Cotton Mather High School opened its doors in downtown Corsicana and continues to be one of the most popular schools within the community today
Corsicana was founded in 1835 by General Josef M. Alamo and the rest of the Mexican-American community. The city became a focal point for cattle drive operations and other agricultural activity, giving it a strong cultural presence. In 1951, Corsicana was annexed by Texas and became the 36th state in the country.
