Corsicana is located on the Brazos River, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Austin and 80 miles (130 km) northeast of Dallas. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first European to visit Corsicana was Father José de Jesús López on July 4, 1763. Spanish missionaries established a mission here in 1836 and named it San Antonio de Padua after St. Anthony of Padua. In 1876, Texas became an American state and Corsicana became its capital. On May 1, 1907, Corsicana was made a city charter by mayor Wm Hennigan with 99% approval from the voters. The name "Corsican" comes from Italian and means "town on the bayou." In 1916, General John J Pershing sent one thousand soldiers to participate in World War I through Midland County Agricultural Fairgrounds Joint Stock Farm #1 where they engaged in training exercises at Buena Vista Campground west of town near White Sands Lake; this camp later served as their headquarters during World War II when Corpus Christi was not available for military encampments due to its naval base location at Port Aransas Naval Base east of town). In 1951-1952 PTA donated land along FM 727 which would become downtown Corsicana's main square including what is now City Hall Annex Municipal Building; USAA also donated money for improvements to include new streetscape features such as wide sidewalks and trees around all open spaces throughout downtown including what are now most important business districts: Main Street between Hearn Avenue/USAA Headquarters and Broadway/Municipal Building Square - soon renamed Park Drive; First National Bank - now Chase Bank Plaza across from City Hall Annex Municipal building across from First Texaco gas station east of Main Street
