The area that would become Corsicana was first settled by people from eastern Spain in 1836. The original name for the community was Avila de las Palmas, but it was changed to Corsicana in 1845 because Spanish settlers were finding it hard to find a place called Avila on their route between San Antonio and Austin. The first post office in Corsicana opened in 1848, and its name remained unchanged until 1907 when it changed to Corsicana proper. The town became an agricultural center due to its location along two major ranches - White Sands Ranch and Browning Ranch - which produced milk, wheat, corn, cotton, eggs, pigs and chickens; as well as tobacco products such as cigars and cigarettes. During World War II many veterans returned home after serving abroad and started a munitions plant near Corsicana that manufactured ammunition for American troops fighting in Europe. This helped contribute to economic development around thetown during this time period as well as create jobs for locals who did not have college degrees or industry experience available to them at that time. In 1969 local banks merged into First National Bank of Fort Worth with plans for the merger to create one regional bank throughout Tarrant County with branches throughout most of central Texas (except Dallas). However this merger fell through due to regulatory issues including differences over capital requirements within First National Bank's parent company Chase Manhattan Brothers Incorporated (Chase). In 1990 First National Banks merged into Wells Fargo & Co., headquartered in Denver Colorado; however this merger also failed due primarily to differences over interest rates charged on checking accounts by both banks within Well Fargo's parent company JBL Financial Corporation (JBL) – which could have implications for other potential mergers across different banking conglomerates going forward should separate companies charge significantly different rates on credit cards or other redemptions activities! A new proposal by former state Representative Webb Toole (#8) seeking legislation creating a special purpose district adjacent Interstate 20 specifically around Caney Creek Reservoir sought donations from businesses interested in opening stores there if he were successful with his effort; however no action took place following his election loss in November 2014 despite him having filed legislation proposing such a district several times since his term ended just months earlier!
