Corsicana, Texas is a small town located in Midland County, Texas. The population was 5,821 at the 2000 census. As of the 2010 census, Corsicana had a population of 6,396. For most of its history Corsicana has been home to gun targets and shooting ranges. In 1881, a man by the name of John Smeaton opened up his own rifle range in Corsicana. At that time there were only six rifles in Corsicana- all owned by Smeaton himself. The first target shooting competition held in Corsicana took place on October 9th 1881 between local residents Tom Dooley and John Smeaton. Dooley’s goal was to shoot as many rounds as possible at a wooden target without hitting it. In 1880s and early 1890s there wasn’t much infrastructure available for target shooting competitions so shooters had to use their homes or barns as targets. In 1906 gunowners in Corsicana formed the “Corsican Riflemen” Local Citizens Club which later became known as the American Legion Club during World War I due to patriotic reasons such as supporting America’s war effort against Germany while living within easy reach of German gunsports. The club also sponsored tournaments where members could compete with other towns across Midland County for cash prizes and bragging rights (similar to what is now called regional championships). By 1915, when World War I ended, firearms ownership among men over 65 years old had decreased significantly throughout most of America due to Prohibition laws; however firearms remained legal in Texas until 1934 when state regulation changed from open carry to concealed carry permit requirements for all citizens over 21 years old (the age requirement still applies today). Consequently NRA member Bob Buttitta organized an event at Norris Air Force Base on December 2nd 1914 known as “Texas Cup Shootin” which attracted participants from all over the Lone Star State including San Antonio and Austin who brought their own shotguns and pistols along with trophy cups made from pre-prepared steel plates set off into clusters about 20 feet high representing scores achieved by individual shooters at various distances both centerfire & reloaded magazines fired at 100 yards using .30-.35 caliber bullets (today this event is considered an annual tradition sanctioned by NRA headquarters in Arlington Heights IL). After Buttitta’s success his friend Tex Ricketts followed suit soon after conducting similar events outdoors meeting every Saturday morning until his death in 1943 leaving behind an ongoing tradition at then-Norris AFB involving airman/gun owners from around the world who would come fly into LPF not knowing what would happen next

The Corsicana Massacre took place on November 15, 1911, when a group of gunmen opened fire on a crowd of unarmed citizens celebrating the weekend in the small town of Corsicana. The massacre left six people dead and 34 injured.
Corsicana is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat for Bexar County. As of the 2010 census, Corsicana had a population of 112,814. The city was founded on October 16, 1837 by General Antonio López de Santa Anna and two other Spanish officers as La Fayetteville. It became an independent municipality on February 12, 1847 when it seceded from Bexar County to create its own government. Corsicana was named after Italian general Ferdinando Corsico who fought in the Mexican War of Independence and later served as governor of Coahuila and Chihuahua before becoming president of Mexico in 1846. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg captured Corsicana with help from local Texans led by Mayor John Wesley Hardin III (). Today Corsicana is a thriving community with several cultural attractions including The University Of Texas at Austin (UTA) campus which is home to over 50 percent of the city's population, the Legion Stadium which has been used both for football and other sports events since 1936 and now serves as a performing arts center, as well as Guadalupe Park which houses several small businesses located within walking distance of each other as well as public buildings such as City Hall and City Library.
