Corsicana is a small town in Texas, the seat of Cameron County. The population was 2,898 at the 2000 census. It is located in the northern half of the state, on the banks of the Brazos River. In 1907, Corsicana was founded as a result of a merger between two other towns: White Oak and Amarillo. The first post office in Corsicana opened on October 15, 1907. The name "Corsicana" came from Spanish meaning "the crossing over." The town was originally named after José Corríguez Carranza who fought for Mexico during the Mexican-American War. He also bought land in what is now Corsicana and donated it to the government for development into an agricultural center. The first settlement near present day Corsicana was established around 1876 by European Americans working on Rancho San Antonio de la Frontera that adjoined Rancho La Purísima de los Bajos which then belonged to José Garza y Soto. By 1886 there were about fifty residents living in three stores and one school; all had been organized into company towns under Governor Manuel Cámpora because of lack of water resources nearby and fear that Texans would move away if their county became part of Mexico proper. In 1907, when Texas attained statehood, its first governor Austin appointed Judge James Denny to chair a commission to recommend names for new counties within Texas based upon population density so that each individual county could be self-supporting without needing outside interference or help from neighboring counties which had become sharecroppers with wealthy landowners since independence days twenty years earlier! After much deliberation judge Dennyselected Corsicanawhich satuated along Slaughter Branch east of White Oak Creek nearest Dallas! (This area now encompasses most parts of Garland) Commissioners John Fenton and Wm Hogg voted against giving Corsicanawho satiated along Slaughter Branch east of White Oak Creek nearest Dallas! On January 14th 1912 Clyde Capps purchased 1/4 mile (1 km²) south side lot #2 Lots 7 & 8 Corner Of Main Street And Elm Street From Jno Pemberton For $10 per acre ($100 per hectare). This site became known as "The Oaks" after purchase date
