Corsicana, Texas is a city located in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Corsicana is the county seat of Cameron County. Corsicana was founded by Antonio Corsican in 1836. He located the town on the banks of the Trinity River and named it after his home country, Italy. The first post office was established in Corsicana in 1837. The town's population rapidly grew during the 1840s, reaching 100 residents by 1850. By 1860, Corsicana had a school and a courthouse. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee invaded Texas and Battle Creek Manifesto led to the displacement of many Italian-American settlers from central Texas. In 1865, as part of Reconstruction efforts in Texas, Corsicana became one of several townships that were made up of African Americans who had lost their property or jobs following the American Civil War. After Reconstruction ended in 1876, white Texans began to arrive in large numbers in Corsicana, which continued to grow until World War II when it reached its peak population of 300 residents. During World War II, Corsicana became an important military airbase for the United States Air Force due to its location at what is now Goodwood Airport just outside of town limits. Following World War II, however, the population gradually declined as more and more people left for other parts of Texas or moved away because of economic instability caused by technological advances such as oil drilling offshore and related industry development within state borders; however, some remnants remain today (e.g., Goodwood Airport) while portions have been annexed into neighboring cities or counties over time (e.g., Carthage). Today Corsicana is a small community with a rich history that comes alive each year when events like Fourth Of July fireworks displays or Corpus Christi Blues music festivals take place throughout downtown streetside squares and parks throughout much of Midland County including most notably Main Street where many iconic buildings dating back to early 20th century are still active including The First National Bank building which has been listed on both the National Register Of Historic Places (NRHP) and State Register Of Historical Landmarks since 1978) .
