On July 20th 1836 they arrived at what is now downtown Corsicana and began construction on a log cabin known as "Fenton's Cabin". It was situated on land that later became known as Old Hwy 12 (now I-10). The first school for students in Corsicana was built on this site in 1840 by Mrs Anna Dawson Storey and Dr James Fenton Sr.. In 1846 Dr JF S met with General Sam Houston who offered him property along Ranches Road 4 north of town if he could provide military service against Mexico during the Mexican-American War which ended with Mexico defaulting on its war debt In 1850 John Witherspoon opened a grocery store near present day Third Street/Highway 10 east of town which became one of the most successful businesses ever established within Corsicana limits After years of growth due to commercialism and annexation by other cities throughout central Texas it reached its peak around 1930 when it had stores outlets throughouttownside extending into south Dallas However following World War II economic hardships caused many closures among busy merchants including Witherspoon’s grocer prompting Mayor Clements to enter into an agreement with local banker Lamar Hunt whereby Hunt would own 50% shareholding allowing onlyCorp Stores chains like Safeway continue operating while all others be closed or converted into warehouse storage . Withdrawal from interstate commerce combined with increased competition made these shores difficult for large grocers until recently
