Corsicana is a small town located in the middle of Texas, on the border with Mexico. It was founded in 1836 by Spanish settlers who came to the area to escape persecution in Spain. Corsicana quickly became a center for cattle and goldmining operations, and its economy thrived until the late 1800s. Today, it remains a sleepy small-town community with a rich history that is still celebrated today. The town's origins date back to 1836, when Spanish colonists arrived in what is now Texas to escape persecution in Spain. The first people to settle here were French Canadians who had come overland from Canada. They built cabins near what is now Corsicana Creek and started farming land around it. In 1838, Mexican soldiers burned down some of these buildings, starting the town's growth process. In 1845, Corsicana incorporated as a town under the name of San Antonio de los Alvarados (later changed to Corsicana). This name derived from nearby San Antonio de Padua (St Peters), which was then the capital of Mexico. At this time, there were only about 50 people living in Corsicana proper, compared to 3,000 people living across all of Texas at that time! The town grew rapidly due to its location and its importance as a center for cattle and goldmining operations. By 1850, Corsicana had more than 2,000 residents! During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Corsicana served as an important military supply base for General Sam Houston's forces fighting against Confederate troops ravaging Texas during that conflict. In 1865, after being liberated from Confederate control following the war's end, Corsica surrendered unconditionally and became part of Mexico! From this point on though until 1930s when it reverted back under Mexican rule again*, Cossack raids began occurring throughout much of central Mexico* such as into Texcoco County*, CA* whereupon Mexican authorities expelled all European immigrants** beginning what has become known as "the cleansing" period*. * From 1830 onwards Mexicans began residing permanently within their own country rather than permitting foreigners resettlement ** according to peso values at that time
