Corsicana is a city in Starr County, Texas, United States. The population was 813 at the 2010 census. Corsicana is the county seat of Starr County. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first mention of Corsicana comes from 1848 when Captain Elisha Bogan wrote about it as "Cheyenne City". In 1896, when Texas became a state, Corsicana was its capital and served as the legislative capital for much of that decade. In 1902, John W. Cook founded the town of Corsicana on Red River east of present-day Corsicana and named it after himself and his son-in-law Nelsons ranch in Oklahoma Territory which he had bought in 1881 just prior to becoming a US Senator from Texas. The town took form circa 1903 when JW Cook's Ranch & Grist Mill (later renamed JW Cooke Grain) opened with 6 gristmills working over an estimated 100 acres (40 hectares). By 1907 there were 11 businesses in town including two banks, twelve restaurants/lounges, six churches and three schools; also 12 homes and one hotel were built along Russell Street between 1900 and 1912. In 1923 Clyde Hargrave Jordan purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) east of downtown from Nelsons to provide access to what would become known as Joe Pool Lake which provided drinking water for many residents until well into the 21st century. In 1927 Driscoll Brothers drove their 4x4 truck up onto Pool Lake to remove all trash generated by local residents then hauled it away on horseback or flatbed trailer before driving back down to collect more waste each day; this continues today as Cartel Creek Waste Management Company LLC's trash hauling program providing quality refuse collection service for the citizens of Corsicanna since 1923! Corsicana, Texas is a city in Corpus Christi County, Texas, United States. The population was 809 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Brazoria County and the third-largest city inTexas after Houston and Dallas. When it incorporated as a municipality on February 14, 1907, Corsicana was the first small town in Texas to do so. The history of Corsicana can be traced back to 1836 when James Fenton established a trading post at what is now Corsicana Creek. By 1865, Fenton had built a gristmill on the creek that became known as "Fenton's Mill". In 1892, Waco Tractor Company founder John D. Rockefeller donated land for a cottonseed oil refinery which became known as "Rockefeller Bros.' Cotton Refinery". The city's name changed from Corsicana Creek to Corsicana on December 15 of that year by ordinance passed by the City Council. In 1915, American Tobacco Company president Harry Goodfellow laid out 1 million square feet (97 hectares) of new coking coal mine and smelting plant near present-day downtown Corsicana with assistance from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Goodfellow later said he wanted "the smoking cities" all across America - one day they would be located around his mine - so he named his development Camden Park after Camden County in New Jersey where American Tobacco was manufacturing cigarettes at the time. In 1927, American Petroleum Corporation merged into Standard Oil of California and corporate headquarters moved from Newark to Corpus Christi; however Standard continued production at its Camden park facility until 1984 when it left state service and ceased operations entirely. The company's former site still overlooks much of downtown Corsicana today as part of White Sands National Monument while also lying just off Uptown Drive adjacent to Gulfstream Airport; access is available through museum entrance (southwest corner). On October 22nd 1957 an EF4 tornado touched down about two miles east-northeast of downtown Corsicana; damage totaled $5 million ($ when adjusted for inflation). That same day an EF3 tornado struck northwest side streets near IH 10 about one mile south-southeast of downtown before continuing northeast into rural Brazoria County unfazed; total damage was estimated at $18 million ($when adjusted for inflation). A year later another EF2tornado struck north side streets just west of IH 10 east-northeast duing Starke Street between Truman Boulevard and FM 1960; damages totaled almost $30 million ($when adjusted for inflation). On May 2nd 1959 local residents reported hearing loud noises coming from within their Limits Development building adjoining IH 10 just outside business hours due to broken windows caused by some unknown object caught fire during welding shortly afterwards leaving behind glowing metal posts & numerous melted parts inside building aside evidence suggesting Tornado never touchedbuilding & instead lifted object high into sky causing majority debris field touching ground several hundred yards southeast over open field then quickly dissipating sans injuries or loss affecting interstate traffic}. Two years later on November 24th 1961 another large hailstone measuring nearly half a meter in diameter fell out of the sky over town center approximately 400 meters (~500 yd) southwestof limits development & impacted home directlynorthwestof main street killing 3 people including mother & daughter living therealongside entire family pets (& livestock); this event remains one OF THE LARGER HAILSTONES TO EVER LAND IN CORSICANA THAT YEAR!
