Corsicana is a small town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Corsicana is the county seat of Midland County. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Corsicana was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1541. In 1836, Nicholas Trimble founded the dry goods store and post office here with his brother-in-law John Neely Richardson. Richardson served as mayor from 1868 to 1870 and 1872 to 1880. The Trimbles donated land for a courthouse and school district here in 1892-93. A cotton gin was built here by Ole Bull in 1907 and operated until it burned down in 1959; it has been rebuilt several times since then. In 1865, James Pemberton established a cattle drive through Midland County that led to what is now Corsicana. By 1903, there were over 1 million head of cattle living in Midland County alone!
Corsicana was founded in 1881 by Italian immigrants. It grew rapidly as a cotton town, and became the capital of Texas in 1902. In 1929, it was renamed Dallas after then- President Herbert Hoover. The city experienced significant growth in the 1960s and 1970s as a center for oil production and manufacturing. However, recent economic decline has led to redevelopment of downtown areas into more low-income or market-rate housing.
