Corsicana, Texas is located in the Midwestern United States. It is bordered by Wichita County to the north and east, Lubbock County to the south and west, and Medina County to the northwest. Corsicana was founded on November 3, 1857 by a group of Mormon pioneers who arrived from Deseret Village in Utah. The town was named after José de la Cruz y Urtubey, an admiral in Spanish service who fought against American forces during the Mexican-American War. The Amistad slave ship that later brought freed slaves to Corsicana was captained by David Griffiths Cisneros. The first store in Corsicana opened its doors on December 5, 1857. By 1865, there were ten businesses in town including two banks and three grocery stores. Post office operations began on January 1, 1865 and were continued until 1974 when they were transferred to Wichita Falls. In 1895, a railroad line reached Corsicana from Wichita Falls and became known as the "Corsican Railroad." By 1910, there were twenty-one businesses in town with a population of about 2200 people. In 1915, local farmers formed what is now called the "Corsican Agricultural Society" which helped promote agriculture within Corsicana limits through subsidies and marketing programs. By 1925, it had developed into what is now known asTexaco Incorporated (TSX: TPA) which operated over 350 gasoline stations across North America before being acquired by ConocoPhillips Corporation (TXN: COP) in 2006 for $5 billion dollars.(1) In 1931-1932 General Motors Company built a factory at Carthage Road Industrial Park east of town which employed more than 1000 workers until it closed down due to World War II shortages of aluminum ore.(2) During this time period also downtown saw some construction activity such as the erection of the first municipal building designed specifically for use as a county courthouse(3) The population of Corsicana peaked at 4000 residents around 1960 butdeclined rapidly due principally to oil busts throughout much of that decade(4). However since then growth has been sporadic at best with most recent Census data indicating an estimated 2000-4000 Residents living within city Limits only.(5) Today operational aspects of Texaco Incorporated are headquartered out of Dallas/Ft Worth with production conducted at their plant near Waco TX while company headquarters remain situated within downtown CorsicANA
