By 1860, when Confederate forces attacked Mexico City, Texan General Zachary Taylor ordered General John J. Pershing to march into downtown Mexico City and capture or destroy any Mexican military installations within three days. On November 6th 1862, General Pershing destroyed what is now downtown CorpusChristi while simultaneously launching a coordinated assault against Houston which resulted in more than 100 casualties among Texans including many Generals Jamieson commandeered cannons from nearby Goliad Barracks and used them against Confederate troops commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James Longstreet near present day Rice University inHouston
Corpus Christi, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Chambers County. The population was 921,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock–San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area around Corpus Christi was originally populated by Native Americans, who called it "Nacogdoches". In 1836, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna founded San Fernando de Acosta near what is now Corpus Christi to serve as a military post for his troops marching into Mexico from New Mexico. Santa Anna named the town after Saint Christopher, which had a powerful impact on its development. The first settlers in this area were Frenchmen and Germans who built small homes and businesses along the banks of the Trinity River for trade with Mexican traders and travelers passing through their region on their way to Matamoros or Zacatecas. By 1845, Englishman John Wilkinson had opened up a successful cotton gin in nearby Houston and decided to expand his business into this new market. He named his company Wilkinson Cotton Gin Company after himself and began trading out of Corpus Christi along with other American cotton gin companies such as Cook & Co., Pemberton & Son (later Rankin & Beattie), James Hogg & Sons (later Jockey Club), Wills Bros., Banks Brothers (later First National Bank), Hogg Coal Company, Hubbell Coal Company, and others until he sold all his interests in 1892 to United States Rubber Corporation president Herbert Hoover for $2 million dollars ($101 million today). This new company made many contributions to local society including building numerous schools, churches, hospitals, civic buildings such as City Hall and Market Square downtown; creating over 100 jobs directly or indirectly during its short existence; being one of America's earliest commercial riverboats; developing Cox's Candy stores in various parts of town throughout its years of operation; sponsoring many civic events including fund-raisers for various charities; most notably becoming involved early in American history with establishing la Casa Blanca Hotel - now known as Trump International Hotel - across from downtown just south of present day downtown Corpus Christi on Louisiana Street just east of I-10 exit 29A
