Corpus Christi, Texas was founded on November 16, 1846, by the Mexican-American War veteran José de la Hoz. The town was named for the Cross of Christ that found its first permanent home near the present day intersection of I-10 and FM 359. The Trinity River served as a natural border between Corpus Christi County and Galveston County until it was acquired by Houston in 1873. A cotton gin was built in 1850 and became known as "The Grit Mill" due to its grinding power. By 1860, CorpusChristi had become one of the largest steamboats afloat with over 100 passengers capacity. In 1865, a smallpox pandemic struck Corpus Christi and many residents left for their health concerns in Dallas or San Antonio. However, because of this event, CorpusChristi came to be considered one of America's most healthy cities due to its lack of epidemics during this time period. In 1892, oil began being extracted from Anadarko shale in what is now Midland County and production increased quickly thanks to wells drilled by John Denton Jr. One year later, Denton founded Refinery Park which became an international center for oil refining following World War II when Germany threatened to block U.S.-owned shipping lanes through the war zone if they didn't stop importing gasoline from Russia. After years of planning and construction progressivism led by Mayor Joe Barnes (1911–1967), the city completed several large projects such as Houston Heights (now Museum District) and Baytown Center (now downtown). In 1971 Hurricane Astoria caused extensive damage to downtown Corpus Christi; however Barnes rebuilded much larger than before with plans for a new $100 million arena that would include an insurance company Tower that would house multiple theatersadiums including Regal Cinemas across two levels while also housing ground floor office space used by both city government agencies as well as private businesses like ExxonMobilTexacoand Shell Oil Company at two basement levels beneath what is now Sam Houston Coliseum complex on Red River Street just south of Main Street
