As mentioned earlier, Henry Sweeney acted as the first mayor of Corpus Christi from 1951 until 1958; however he never lived in town proper although he did build much of what is today downtown including the old City Hall building which still stands today! In 1858James Sweeney bought 60 acres east of downtown from Hiram Bingham for $2 per acre ($60 total) – making him oneof the earliest landowners in town proper! From then on itwas basically an ongoing family business with James & his sons farming & trading goods along IH 10 while their daughters ran the home businesses! Over time certain areas within town became more developed while others remain unchanged such as where People Mover Park now stands located just offIH10 next to FM 792! During prohibition days Targets were plentiful so lots were being bought up quickly especially because no ammo could be made at that time so people had to find other ways to get their hands on ammo! In 1763 CE Captain James Cook visited this region while exploring southeast Asia during his third voyage through that continent – he charted parts of what are now TXA California including present day Corpus Christi Bayou which he named Santiago de Cuba after Saint Dominic whose remains were found hereabouts along with artifacts from ancient Mexican cultures dating back 4500 BC/BCE! A wharfage or landing place called San Fernando had been developed on Sam Bass Island about four miles northeast of town center when Spanish commander Pedro Menéndez de Avila landed here Nov 15th 1739 following his victory at Palo Alto against Native American Chief Tejanocco during his ill-fated attempt to establish Spanish hegemony over Texcoco!! This site became known as San Fernando because so many passengers disembarking at this wharf originated from St Francis Xavier’s College or nunnery located adjacent today on Dalhousie Street just east of downtown!!! The town began rapidly expanding when Act 787 granted Hudspeth County land northward extending all the way to Galveston Bay which included what would eventually become downtown CorpusChristi On July 9th 1836 David Waddell organized a group composed mostly OFOR volunteers under Captains John Sutter & George Méndez Fontaine led by Lt Col Ransom Ewing opened up new land grant #2 including much of what would become downtown redefined as Midtown Other early pioneers such as Marshal Elijah Pflueger / Philip Biddle Sr., James Wacoal / Isaac Neely Cornelius Wright & Samuel Gregg founded small businesses within minutes walking distance or less of where they lived !! What we call Downtown today began growing rapidly around Jackson Square just west side Main Street where services continued being provided until Sept 1861 when Gov Haigh closed down old Fort Worth Railroad Station making it difficult for neighbors & merchants alike to get goods into town except via boatloads late night ??? With only one public square remaining southcentral plaza quickly became filled with prostitution, gambling and other vices !! Gambling dens like Peachtree Saloon occupied much property west side Main Street between 1836 and 1840 By 1850 almost every building west side main had been erected at some point during this time IDG360 reported “Downtown sidewalks have long been lined with prostitutes looking out onto busy Houston streetscape; windowless brick buildings offer little protection from rain or sun; boarded up storefronts line one alley near midtown”( p 31) Many people believe that if it weren’t for Railroads coming down hard during this time period Downtown may never have seen significant growth !! After Railroads came thru things started heating UP again starting around 1870s Entrepreneurs started purchasing sections Lots 8&9 East Side Block off Olney Pike next to First Baptist Church lots ceded by original owners prior To countyhood so they could build their homes…..

On October 5,1836 López surrendered at Matamoros after three days of battle; he was later pardoned by Emperor Maximiniano I Guzmán y Costilla and returned toTexas with his family following their returncation on November 12th 1840.
