In 1836, Sam Houston was elected president of the Republic of Texas, which included most of what is now Texas. Upon his election, Houston declared that if Mexico would not allow slavery in its territory then Texans should go into Mexican territory and establish their own government with their own laws. This resulted in war between Texians and Mexicans (known as the Mexican War). Houston became governor of the new republic and ordered Fort Point to be built on an island near Corpus Christi to protect against possible Mexican attack. The fort was completed in 1848 and named for General James Fannin who commanded it during the war. After Houston's death in 1850, his brother-in-law John Sibley became governor but resigned due to health problems later that year. In December 1851, Isaac Newton Pearce was chosen by President Pierce as acting governor until Sibley could return from Washington D.C.. On February 2nd1852 Pearce died suddenly at age 44 after a long illness; this made John Crain effective as acting governor until March 14th when Richardson took office because no one else could be found to fill Pearce's shoes permanently In 1861 Confederate General Robert E Lee called upon Santa Anna to come out Fighting Creek because he felt that Texans needed someone strong inside their borders to stop Union troops from crossing into Mexico Santa Anna refused and began building up his army outside Corpus Christi instead On April 9th 1861 Confederate General Braxton Bragg sailed up San Antonio River followed by 1,000 men including 400 cavalry under Colonel George Hogg who landed at Brownsville on September 12th 1861 while supplies were being unloaded at Acapulco shipyards . On October 20th 1861 Captain Gari Poe relieved Colby commanding US Naval Forces stationed at Brazoria Bayou with orders to march downriver towards Corpus CHRISTI on October 24th or 25th depending upon reports . Roe thought there might have been some connection between Bragg & Poe & decided against marching any further so he returned back upriver . On November 3rd1861 Captains David Dixon Porter & Edward Pogue attempted an Invasion down river but encountered stiff resistance off shore Virtue Island aborting both attempts due lackof forces . By November 11TH there were only about 50 men remaining loyal to Lt Gov Richardson
