At that time, guns were legal only for men over 21 years old and were not allowed on public property. In 1872, a group of businessmen formed the Pistol Club to promote handgun ownership and protect society from crime. The club functioned until 1886 when it was disbanded due to lack of membership. The following yearsaw a change in law when Texas passed an act allowing concealed carry of handguns with permits. This event is considered to be the beginning of gun violence in Corpus Christi. From 1886-1920, gun violence increased significantly in Corpus Christi due to prohibitionist policies by local officials. After 1920, Gun Violence Prevention Act promoted responsible handgun ownership by breweries and other businesses which led to a decrease in shootings throughout town. However, this period also saw some high-profile shootings such as that which killed 20 people at an amusement park during Christmas season 1923). Gun violence prevention laws have been enacted multiple times since then; however they have never completely stopped occurrences within Corpus Christi or elsewhere in Texas related to firearms

The first European settlement was made by Pedro Menéndez de Avila on March 2, 1527 near what is now downtown CorpusChristi when he claimed land along Galveston Bay for Spain under the Treaty of Nájera (1526). Spain built Fort San Fernando de la Trinidad (now Presidio del Rio Grande), which became an important military post against Spanish pirates and piracy during the 17th century; it was renamed Punta Espinosa in 1695 after one of Galveston's Peaks, Espinosa Peak. In 1837 Mexico gained independence from Spain and changed its name to Mexico City; before that it had been called Havana. Upon becoming a U.S. territory in 1846, Texas appointed James Kenedy as governor with jurisdiction over all Mexican territories west of El Paso; Kenedy designated Corpus Christi as his new capital because he thought Galveston would be too far away from Houston for American settlers to take advantage of its resources and trade opportunities. In 1847 United States surveyor Edward Culp visited Galveston Peninsula and recommended that Austin be moved from Georgetown northward into Travis County so that transportation could be improved betweenHouston and Austin byrailroads then being constructed across Trinity River valley; Austin was chosen over Corpus CHRISTI because more people lived there already than were needed for government operations at Georgetown-Portugal Road junction and because land grants had been issued earlier in East Texas Rancho Seco by Governor Fannin to Emmett Till Jr., Jesse Wacoff & others seeking acquisitions eastward beyond present day Rockport & Brownsville TX including parts now included within Huntington Beach CA & New Braunfels TX adjoining Lubbock TX - these ranchos lay immediately northwesterly & concurrent with present day Medina Valley between Brownsville Rd/Houston Hwy 105W & US 281E - thus formed Trinity River Valley Pedernales Highland Rim composed largely today’s Brazoria County straddling portions – Santa Barbara Mountains extending easterly into Medina Valley forming northwestern border

After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, land grants were given to various religious orders including Mission San Fernando Rey de España (1836), Mission Santa Barbara y Monterey (1849), and Franciscan friars (1856). A landing party led by Commodore James Fenton at Laguna Seca on November 25, 1835 named it Corpus Christi after Spanish viceroy Captain General Pedro Menéndez Caballero's flagship República Victoria. In 1840, a town charter was granted to Josefa Alcántara who named it La Paz; this name reverted back to Corpuschristi upon Alcántara's death in 1865. The first post office opened in 1846 with Johnnie Hodges as mailer. The town grew rapidly due to shipbuilding and fishing until World War II when all shipping stopped because of Hiroshima bombings; CorpusChristi became known for shrimp farming during this time period In 1963 Mayoraldo Castillo proposed that the then-new municipal government build a new high school which would serve as both a community center and training ground for future mayorsalty candidates should they choose not run for another term or if they ran but lost incumbency; voters approved castillo's proposal by a wide margin In 1978 Mayor Arturo Torres levied an unprecedented 3% sales tax Proposition 1123 effective January 1, 1978 which raised $10 million dollars toward building two new schools within five years with no corresponding increase in property values; this measure failed due largely to opposition among homeowners opposed to any change whatsoever regarding their property taxes . For many years following Prop 1123 only City Council meetings were held without mayoral input or debate over what bills should be considered part of local government policy
Corpus Christi was founded in 1847 by Spanish settlers who named it Luling. The city grew rapidly and in 1872, it became the county seat of County of Texas. It was renamed Corpus Christi in 1912 after Saint Crispin's Day. In 1916, the United States Navy established a Naval Shipyard here to build submarines. The shipyard closed in 1978 and its ashes were scattered over Corpus Christi Bay.
