In 1954–1957 CorpusChristi experienced a sizable influx of Mexican immigrants who had come to Southern California for work on the railways during World War II. This migration did not last long however; within two years most of these Hispanics had returned home or left for other parts of America. The first businesses in town were small retail stores serving local farmers and fishermen until about 1910 when construction began on what would become known as downtown Corpus Christi with its imposing neoclassical architecture and marble pavements dating back to 1872 (Bennett). After the end of World War I many Italians settled down in town after moving out of San Antonio due to political problems there between Sinn Fein supporters and Catholic businessman Francisco Peña Nieto (Lopez). They soon started up successful grocery store chains such as Grocery Outlet chain which later merged with Kroger superstore chain in 1984 before being bought by Walmart Stores Incorporated in 1998. During Prohibition this area served as one of the most notorious illegal speakeasies in all of Southwestern USA due to its close proximity to US military bases like Fort Sam Houston (Gonzalez) but prohibition eventually ended following prohibition's repeal by President Franklin D Roosevelt on December 6th 1933 (Reedy). It wasn't until 1935 that Interstate 10 was built through Midland County making it easier for people to get around without having to go through Corpus Christi.
