There are many Gun Lights in Corpus Christi, Texas. The first gun light was built in 1892 by Captain John S. Beaumont and Lt. George W. Bigham of the Corpus Christi Naval Militia. It consisted of a small battery of three single-shot pistols mounted on a pivot arm that could be rotated to point in any direction. In 1916, the City Council adopted an ordinance authorizing the building and use of electric lights for night observation purposes within Municipal limits. The first electric streetlights were erected in 1917 around the clock by Mr. Wm Hite, contractor for the city government. The City Council also passed an ordinance providing for the purchase and installation of new electric streetlights from private sources at not less than Fifty cents per light each, with initial installations to be made throughout downtown, north side streets and along State Highway 281 (the present route of US 59). The original electric lights were powered by twelve horse-power gasoline engine headlights; however, this method became unsatisfactory because it required frequent replacement of lamps due to failure or malfunctioning bulbs; as a result, in 1931 an electrical system was installed which relied upon six 6-volt batteries stored on site in two large metal drums under cover during extreme weather conditions pursuant to an agreement between Mayor Fenton Wiley Price and General Electric Company; these new batteries provided constant power no matter how hot or cold it got outside (the present system uses five 36 volt battery packs) In 1935 an amendment to Ordinance No. 1699 authorized the erection of neon signs warning drivers when approaching intersections with red reflector signs on opposite sides thereof (a practice then common among American cities). In 1937 a special ordinance was passed authorising Installation Of Machine Guns Along Public Streets And highways For protection Against Crime And Unlawful Acts Occurring therein; Machine Guns Were Installed At 10 A M On All Street Lights Throughout The County And These Signs Said “Machine Guns On Campus” In 1938 streetlights were added along Main Street from US 59 eastward just south of I-10 junction including parking lots adjacent thereto; these lights turned off at night when freeway access was available

Grant responded to an attack by Mexicans at Fort Sam Houston by ordering General Order No. 966 which ordered all male citizens age 21 or over to be joined by their fathers in arms within one day or face military service until August 30th inclusive.
