On 9 May 1951 King Records opened their new facility adjacent State Fairgrounds after purchasing rights from Jethro Gibbs & Sons records store owner Ewing Gibbons who opened his first record store in 1911 originally within walking distance of fairgrounds In 1984 Koppers Drug Mart acquired Central Grocery chain which merged with Kroger stores statewide under Kroger/Koppers merger plan . As major shopping malls started sprouting up throughout Southwest Texas Interstate highways became bottlenecked forming what became known as 'Highways 101/102 Duplication'. In late 1990s Walmart entered South Texas market becoming largest retailer until they exited in 2000 when local competitor Lowe's took over . Today most activities surrounding downtown are centered around Midtown Plaza where several large retailers anchor multi level mall providing retail space along with high speed internet service
