Corpus Christi, Texas is a city in the southern Hudspeth County of Texas, United States. The population was 149,812 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. The name Corpus Christi comes from Spanish: "corpus" meaning body and "christi" meaning saved or delivered. The first recorded settlement in what would become Corpus Christi was made on November 17, 1836 by Father José de la Cruz and about fifty men under his command when they landed on the Biloxi River at what is now Point Isabelle. San Antonio de Padua had earlier established a mission there in 1825. By 1840, all of Hudspeth County had been founded and included Corpus Christi as well as Galveston to the east and Austin to the south. On July 15, 1845, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna surrendered Yoakum County (now Hale County) to Ulysses S. Grant following his successful Invasion of Mexico which ended Mexican independence from Spain two years earlier than expected In 1850, John Fisk opened up Fisk's Landing on Sam Houston Bayou which became one of the earliest ports on Texas' Gulf Coast with cotton exports becoming an important part of Texan economy during this time period On December 12th 1861 Trinity Church – built on land donated by businessman John Denton – played a significant role in providing religious services for Confederate soldiers who were fighting for the South against the Union army during American Civil War On May 6th 1870 James Waddell foundedCW&N Railroad Company with $2 million worth of stock initialed by himself and 50 other investors including JP Morgan & Co., Andrew Carnegie & Co., et al During Reconstruction/Emancipation era (1861-1865), CorpusChristi grew rapidly due to its strategic location between Galveston to the north and Houston to the south - making it an ideal port for goods brought in by railroads such as CW&N In 1865 Port Arthur was destroyed by flooding caused by Tropical Storm Victoria while Corpus Christi continued growing economically due to its location near major waterways

In 1876 it became home to the University ofTexas at Austin before becoming a major center for industry during World War II with shipbuilding and aircraft production leading to significant growth in both sectors. After WWII ended,CorpusChristi experienced rapid growth as waves of immigrants flooded into the city seeking jobs in new industries such as information technology and engineering. In recent decades, civic leaders have workedto preserve downtown streetscape and revitalize some sections of town while promoting economic development which has led to new construction projects such as a $350 million shopping mall project that is scheduledto open in 2020

The town became a port of call for small groups of travelers looking for opportunities to cross the U.S.-Mexico border. The town's growth was due in part to its location at the mouth of the Rio Grande, which made it an important commercial center for early Texas settlers. In 1848, Corpus Christi became Mexico's new capital after Mexico gained independence from Spain. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Corpus Christi joined forces with Confederate States of America (CSA) units to help defend against Union advances intoTexas. The city surrendered on July 6, 1865, days before Texas achieved statehood as a United States territory. The post-war period saw tremendous growth in Corpus Christi as oil production began to increase in Southwest Texas. This led to increased demand for goods and services from local residents and businesses alike, which helped spur economic development throughout the cityscape over the next several decades. Today, Corpus Christi is one of the largest cities in Texas and has become known for its thriving economy and cultural attractions - including its popular week-long San Antonio International Festival each summer!
