In 1846, when Mexican forces invaded Texas, General Sam Houston ordered Colonel John Folsom to build a wall around Corpus Christi to keep Mexico out. However, this failed because Mexico City didn't believe Houston's claim that he had been forced to surrender by Mexican forces under Santa Anna. As a result, on February 15th, 1850 Mexican troops occupied Fort Brown and began constructing El Paso del Rio (the present-day downtown). On December 3rd of that year, President George Washington issued an order authorizing General Antonio López de Santa Anna to open hostilities against Texan Independence Party leader Travis County Sheriff José Hernandez if he did not capitulate within 24 hours or face military force. After three days of skirmishes and heavy fighting northeastern San Antonio came under Mexican control on December 13th when Texan militias withdrew from town after they learned that they would not be able to hold out much longer against superior Mexican forces led by Commandante Agustín Bueno y Costilla alias Don Hidalgo Gomez de la Rosa y otros Heroes de la Guerra de México however some smaller skirmishes continued until January 6th when general Alvaro Obregon arrived with 4500 men reinforcements and began an all-out assault on town culminating with the first battle at Kilchoman Creek Bridge where about 100 Texans were killed before federal reinforcements arrived and drove the Mexicans back into Mexico City Aftermath of Battle at Kilchoman Creek Bridge: losing about 100 Texans including many officers; total damage $50000 In 1847–1848 two new missions were established near modern day Corpus Christi – BeniciaMissionaries (founded in 1795) and MontereyMissionaries (founded in 1821). These Missions helped provide religious education for local children while also providing trade goods such as maize meal and acorns back home for local farmers. It was during this time period that Spanish speakers encountered some Native Americans living among them in what is now downtown CorpusChristi named “Tituba” meaning “ crossroads” due to their location between Mission San Francisco Arcángeles on one side and Mission Concepción on the other side of US Highway 281 just south of I-10 concurrent with FM 711/US 281/I-10 eastbound & westbound entrance lanes today The first European settlers arrived in what is now corpus christi on October 14th 1800 via vessel anchored off shore off Brownsville TX called La Bahia Grande (Great Bay) which eventually became Brazoria County seat then Galveston County Seat then Harrisburg County Seat then Clearwater County Seat finally CorpusChristi en route from Havana Cuba arriving November 12th 1800 aboard HMS Beagle commanded by Rear Admiral James Cook

Spanish traders brought plants, animals and gold from Mexico to Galveston Island beginning in 1693 before becoming embroiled with Native Americans over control of this valuable trade route. In 1843, a group of Texans organized themselves into an Independent School District to protest government policies that favored Houston over their smaller neighbor across town. When this group failed to gain support from other local school districts, they formed their own district called "Galveston County". The effort backfired when Houston instead annexedGalveston County as part of its annexation process for more space within the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas (present day Veracruz). In 1845, a charter was granted unto Corpus Christi's first library which served as an early warning system against disease outbreaks during the days when travel between Texan towns was difficult and dangerous. Unfortunately for corpus christi's nascent library community, they did not have enough books to keep up with growth within their adopted county/city... until 1851 when Isaac Asimov donated his entire personal collectionof science fiction novels (to be divided among eight libraries throughout America) which allowed for creation of several branch libraries across America including one in Austin TX! The cotton plantation economy around here originated about 1840s but it really took off AFTER WILKINS BEGINNING TO SET UP HIS OWN CATTLE RANCH HERE IN 1850S THAT USED THE LOCATION TO COLLECT FERROUS SILK CLOTHING FOR HIS BUSINESS! cattle stopped being raised there about 1880 due to advances in feed grains etc., so we no longer have those hills or fences here today!
