On November 10th, 1890, citizens from seventeen different towns met at City Hall in downtown Corpus Christi to create "The Town" or "Citizens' Association". They voted unanimously to incorporate under authority granted by Act No. 9602; this act gave them full power and autonomy as a municipal corporation undergalveston law without any previous approval from Houston County officials adjudicating their case or making decisions about zoning or other important aspects thereof A new courthouse was built downtown on Commerce Street between Constitution Avenue and Elm Street in 1893-94costing $5 million dollars hand selected by Mayor James Laughlin because it would be located where ships had been building since before Columbus set foot on America soil! A park was also created adjacent to Kenedy Park called Brazos River Park after then President George Hockaday’s wife who donated land for it In 1909 Hurricane Fayette caused extensive damage across Galveston Island including damages totaling $10 million dollars virtually wiping out shipping activity along Bayou San Felipe making landfall just east of present day downtown CorpusChristi early Saturday morning September 15th killing more than 50 persons & completely destroying many homes & businesses . One may ask why so much loss when such powerful winds were blowing only 5 mph? This storm left behind scars that still exist today including high water levels inside numerous streets throughout downtown & some areas still contain large amounts OF salt brine even unto this day
