The first settlers in Corinth, Texas were the Phelps and Richardson families who arrived in 1851. The town was founded by John P. Richardson, a native of England, and his wife Eliza on the banks of the San Antonio River. The town was named after Corinth, Mississippi where he had been born two years earlier. The Richardsons built a log cabin near the river and started to farm their land. They also developed a small mill which they used to produce flour for local consumption and also exported it to other parts of the country. The railroad reached Corinth in 1875, making it an important stop on the route between Dallas and Houston. This led to increased business for the Richardsons as well as other residents, especially since goods could now be shipped directly from Memphis instead of having to travel through San Antonio or Houston. In addition,Richardson erected a large cotton gin (now known as Richardson Hall) which became one of Corinth's most popular tourist attractions during its time as a small town. In 1905, Corinth amalgamated with neighboring Slaughtertown into one municipality under the name Slaughtertown-Corinthia Municipal Corporation. This merger allowed greater autonomy for both municipalities while still maintaining strong cultural connections between them. By 2002, Slaughtertown-Corinthia had grown sufficiently large that it again exercised its own municipal authority within the boundaries of Corinth-based Slaughtertown Municipality
