The Corinth, Texas community began as a schoolhouse on the corner of Elm and Main Streets in 1872. The first post office was established in Corinth in 1875. In 1904, the town name was changed to Corinth to honor General Ulysses S. Grant's visit to the town that year. The cotton industry played an important role in Corinth's early history. In 1865, Confederate troops burned down the Santa Fe Railroad depot, which left Corinth without access to goods from Mexico. This caused a major drought that struck the area in 1866-67 and Callaway saw his business decline because he could not bring needed goods into town to sell. However, Callaway soon recovered and reopened his store after finding new customers among local farmers who had lost their crops due to the drought. By 1888, Callaway had built two frame houses on Elm Street for himself and his wife Emmeline; these became known as "Callaway Hall." A grain elevator opened at Corinth Municipal Airport in 1950 and made it possible for small businesses throughout the community to stock their shelves with food products direct from various farms rather than having them delivered by truck each week. In 1965, when Texas (then known as Concho) became an independent state, Corinth became its capital city and continued to grow as a result of its importance within Texas government and economic development. The city hosted several large public events during this time including gubernatorial debates between Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger; national conventions of both political parties; legislative summits; business meetings; educational institutions such as Southern Methodist University; professional sports teams such as the Dallas Cowboys football club; entertainment venues such as The Cotton Club nightclub where Elvis Presley entertained magazine reporters before live performances; and popular tourist attractions such as Love Field Air Force Base which served as a military airfield during World War II). Today, Corinth is home to many restaurants, shops, bars/nightclubs/entertainment venues/, libraries/ museums/, hospitals/daycare centres/, schools/universities/, antique stores/, camping areas/, golf courses/(the municipal golf course), naval shipyards/(the Naval Shipyard Annex), water parks/. It also has some heavy industries like Refrigeration & Cooling Company (R&C Co.), Heavy Manufacturing Company (HMC Manufacutors), Petroleum Sands Ltd., Textile Mills & Garments Ltd., Lumberriers' National Association (LNGA).
The town of Corinth, Texas was founded in 1876 by the brothers Charles and John Armstrong. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Brazos River, which made it a natural stop for farmers and entrepreneurs looking for water supplies and other resources. In 1902, Corinth became the county seat of Newton County.
