Corinth quickly became a leading center for cotton trading and cattle shipping. In 1911, the city fathers decided to name the new city after the ancient Greek city of Corinth, which had been sacked many times by Rome. The first resident of Corinth was Dr. J.W. Parkinson who settled in 1903. Corinth's growing population soon needed housing, so a lumberyard and mill were built on what is now First Street between Highways 35 and 2793 in 1914. The brick mills closed in 1951 but portions of their machinery still stands today at Elmendorf & Company Ltd., 5th Avenue South (now chestnut Street). In 1922, Confederate veteran John Waddell moved from San Antonio to Corinth to start his own cottonseed oil business called Waddell Oil & Fertilizer Company Limited which would become one of the largest cottonseed oil companies in Texas history. The company grew rapidly and constructed several large buildings including a warehouse on 6th Avenue South (now US 95) between US 90/US 83 and FM 927/FM 2793 before it merged with Texaco Incorporated in 1970 to form Texaco Corporation (now ExxonMobil). In 1971, Corinth also became home to the world's first open-air refinery when ChevronTexaco Incorporation opened its plant on 4th Street between I-35 and FM 927/FM 2793 adjacent to City Hall Park (now part of Smith Center). Today, ChevronTexaco continues operations as an affiliate of ConocoPhillips Chemical Company LLC located on 8th Avenue North adjacent to Interstate 15 across from Downtown Corpus Christi
