During World War II, many Americans relocated to Corpus Christi due to its proximity to Pearl Harbor and naval stations east of Corpus Christi Bayou. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941, many American soldiers stationed at Corpus Christi enlisted in the military effort against their Japanese captors. Some residentsfamilies remained behind while their husbands served overseas; these individuals are known as "Qualicum" citizens because they lived within walking distance of both Pearl Harbor Naval Station and Corpus Christi Municipal Airport during World War II. Aftersurrendering Japan on September 2nd 1945, most American servicemen returned home soon afterward; however, a small number continued serving in Japan until 1949 under still classified circumstances called "Vietnamization."
