Copperas Cove is located on the Gulf of Mexico and bordered by Slaughter to the east and north, Rusk to the west and south, and Grand Prairie to the southwest. It has a humid subtropical climate with warm summers and mild winters. The first settlement at Copperas Cove was made in 1836 by members of Captain John Fagan's vessel "Eagle" under contract from General Sam Houston. At that time it was known as "Sugar Loaf". The name change came about because early residents were attracted to copper ore found nearslaughts along the coast. The first school was built in 1839 by Mrs. Sarah Ritchie using money gathered from local voters during a special election held in that year for that purpose. A public school system was established in 1840 when land grantees purchased land at Copperas Cove for that purpose; however, it did not remain open long due to financial problems associated with its construction In 1848 William Anson (a slaveowner) donated land at Copperas cove which became an agricultural center after he freeained his slaves there in 1850 There are several contributing factors which led to this development including:1) Spanish occupancy had ended by then and slavery had been abolished throughout much of what is now Texas;2) new investors interested in developing areas rich with copper resources brought about development;3) increased travel within Fort Worth and vicinity for more efficient transportation;4) growth following annexation of San Antonio by Texan government in 1876

Copperas Cove is a small town located in Robertson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,975 at the 2010 census. Copperas Cove was founded by John and Lillie Donelson in 1884. The Donelson family operated a general store and post office there until 1944. In 1945, the first school opened in Copperas Cove. It was a one-room schoolhouse that served as the village's only stop for schooling until 1952. In 1957, Copperas Cove incorporated as a municipality. That year, the town built its first water tower to provide drinking water for residents and businesses. In 1984, Copperas Cove hosted the world's largest hot air balloon race from May 9-11th during which over 100 balloons participated. According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau report,[1] copperas cove has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1 km2). This includes 0% surface land and 100% water.[2] As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,827 people, 714 households, and 464 families residing in the township. The population density was 178 people per square mile (72/km2). There were 808 housing units at an average density of 78 per square mile (29/km2). The racial makeup of copperas cove was 97% White alone; 2% African American; <0% Native American; 2% Asian; 1% Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8%. There were 714 households out of which 36%, or 24%, had children under 18 living with them, 59%, or 31%, were married couples living together , 12%, or 6%, had a female householder with no husband present, and 11%, or 5%, had a male householder with no wife present. Of all households 27%, or 20%, were made up of individuals and 10%, or 5%), had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2
The town of Copperas Cove, Texas was founded in 1874 by J.W. Cotton and his family. The first post office in the town was established in 1875. In 1886, the name of the town was changed to Copperas Cove after copper mining operations began in that area. The mines closed in the early 1990s, but Copperas Cove still retains its name today.
