Copperas Cove is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. It lies on the Gulf of Mexico and within easy access to many attractions in nearby Houston and Sugar Land. The town was founded in 1875 by Austin Cooley and his brother Jameson Cooley as a result of their efforts to find a place to settle after locating several hundred miles (1,600 km) away from any other settlement in Hudspeth County. The brothers had learned about copper mining near Pecos River in New Mexico and decided that this would be an excellent spot for such a venture because it was accessible by land as well as water. They named their new town after one of the two rivers running through it – the Copperas or Santa Fe River according to one account. Cooley's Creek runs through the heart of Copperas Cove while its main street forms the eastern border of town. There are also several lakes and ponds within walking distance of most residents, including Copperas Lake which provides fishing opportunities for both locals and visitors alike; Lakeshore Pond which offers swimming, fishing, canoeing and kayaking; Ivanhoe Reservoir which holds waterfowl hunting season twice each year during fall and spring; Griffin Park providing baseball diamonds, playgrounds and picnic areas; Mines Road leading east to townsite along with various businesses - including a post office - called "Mining Hill".
