Copperas Cove is located in San Antonio County, Texas. It was founded in 1836 by Captain James Cook and his crew of the HMS Endeavour. The name means "copper cove" because of the copper content of the water. Copperas Cove is a census-designated place (CDP) and it has a population of 9,591 as of the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Copperas Cove was Capt. John Biddle who built a cabin in 1836. The present day post office was established at Copperas Cove on May 30, 1840, by order of then-Governor Sam Houston. In 1846, Daniel Webster opened what is now known as Webster's Store on Main Street near the entrance to Copperas Cove. Webster also served as postmaster from 1840-1849 and 1860-1864. In 1892, Fannie Brazos married Drury Catesworth who had come to Texas from New York City with his family on board the USS Constitution which sailed down Mississippi River to Brownsville in 1794 seeking passage to Cuba for President George Washington's aborted attempt at an American coup d'état there that year aimed at restoring Spanish rule over Louisiana and other southeastern U.S.: see also Gadsden Purchase . Drury Catesworth soon after organized Brazos & Associates law firm which became one of America's most successful legal practices during its early decades thanks largely to its fearless defense of clients such as Planters Bankruptcy Group v Pemberton et al., Texaco v Waddell et al., Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.'s Houston Insurer Litigation etc., Brown v Allyn (1910), Texaco Refining Co.'s Gulf Oil Spill (1911), United States Steel Corp.'s Galveston Shipbuilding & Drydock Co.-Galveston Bay Shipbuilding Project (1920). In 1915, Fannie Brazos sold her share interest in her law firm to her son Daniel Brazos Jr.. In 1916 she founded Eveleigh House Bed and Breakfast adjacent to her bed and breakfast inn called Gadsden House Inn where she continued running it until her death in 1984; sister Alice Jarrell ran it until 1990 when it came under ownership by their grandson Darnell Eason Jr.. That same year Eveleigh House Bed and Breakfast became part of Historic Copperas Cove Incorporated following a dispute between Eveleigh House Bed & Breakfast Association Incorporated and Historic Copperas Cove Foundation Incorporated over control rights over the property; both groups claim majority ownership today.)
