The Copperas Cove Mine was a copper mine in the U.S. state of Texas that closed in 1984. It was located in the small town of Copperas Cove, about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Amarillo. The mine produced over 1 million pounds (500,000 kg) of copper per day before it closed, making it the largest copper mine in Texas at the time. The mine was built by Canadian mining company Alcan and operated by American miner Phelps Dodge Corporation from 1967 to 1984. Alcan sold its share in Phelps Dodge to United States Steel Corporation for $2 billion on September 15, 1984. The copper mine reopened as part of United States Steel's new Copperas Cove Mine Operations division on October 3, 1985. In 1906 George Price opened his business called "Cowboys" which sold feed for stockyards on the Brazos River north of town. For many years this was the only grocery store in town and it remained so until 1958 when a second store opened named "The Shop". This store continued to exist until it closed its doors in 1984 after more than fifty years of service. In 1969 a large dam was completed downstream from Copperas Cove by the Midland Corporation and began supplying power to the community for use during off-peak hours; however, due to environmental concerns this project failed to materialize and ended up costing $4 million dollars to complete . The dam's failure led directly tolahtiing water levels making navigation difficult for boats travelling along the coast and caused much damage both upstream from Copperas Cove proper as well as downstream where access had been gained through ditches created by flooding (the result of high water levels). The dam also resulted in extensive erosion that destroyed several homes along with an important fish ladderlift bridge across Clear Fork Creek used by boat traffic connecting Copperas Cove with Hutchinson Island; all these issues led eventually to bankruptcy for Midland Corporation which ultimately led strandsbridge Inc., owners of Hutchinson Island reclamation company which restored much of what had been damaged including rebuilding or replacing most of those dams and bridges) becoming oneofcopperascove's largest employers over fifty years old! retail jobs have gradually replaced manufacturing jobs throughout recent decades while services have grown increasingly prevalent such as health care, banking, real estate, truck stops etcetera; however there are still some traditional manufacturing jobs such as blacksmithing that continue operations despite challenges unique challenges uniqueto this industry like workforce shortages often resulting from automation or relocation within certain industries
