Copperas Cove is a small town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census and 2,206 as of the 2016 estimate. Copperas Cove is located at (29.5609,-99.8956). The first settler in the area was James Fenton in 1845. He and his family built a cabin on Rancho de los Pinos which they named "Fenton's Grove". In 1865, John Withers settled in Copperas Cove and started a cattle ranch that would grow to over . In 1875, Withers donated land for a Methodist church and school which became known as Copperas cove Methodist Church. The town began to form around this community with its own post office, store, blacksmith shop and telephone system. By 1903, Copperas Cove had its own fire department and a library were also established in that year. During World War II Copperas Cove served as an airfield for the military during the Battle of Bataan where it was one of two towns within 20 miles of Manila that was used by American forces during their campaign against Japan. Allied forces bombed or strafed both towns early on December 7th 1941 while they slept leaving them completely destroyed including Copperas Cove which sustained only damage to its buildings from aerial bombing raids. The local Volunteer Air Force continued to provide air service until 1945 when all USAF activity ended in Philippines due to Japanese occupation policy following World War II

The first inhabitants of Copperas Cove were farmers and their families who grew corn, beans, potatoes, oats, and other vegetables. By 1840, the community had grown to include 150 people. In 1851, James Fenton donated land to build an academy for local boys. The academy was opened in 1856 and became one of the most popular educational institutions in Texas. It educated many future leaders including Congressman John Lewis (D-Ga.) and former President George Custer. In 1865, Copperas Cove was renamed Austin after Stephen Austin because he had purchased some land there from J.B. Hogg for $10 per acre
