The copper bullet was developed by Major George Stephenson and Lieutenant John C. Riley of the United States Cavalry. The bullet was designed as a replacement for shot fired from cannons on horseback during the Mexican-American War. The use of copper bullets continued until 1904 when they were replaced by lead ammunition in order to reduce metal fatigue at shooting ranges. In 1907, a rifle range was established in Copperas Cove and lead ammunition became available there as well. Copperas Cove is a small town located in Rangeley County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,604 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Copperas Cove was founded in 1881 by Nicholas Cooke and his family as a stop on their cattle drive from Wichita Falls to Abilene. The community name derived from the cove that lay between their ranch and the nearest water source. At its peak in the 1920s, Copperas Cove had a population of 2,500 people. However, due to economic hardship during World War II and other factors, Copperas Cove's population declined over the next few decades until it reached its current level of 1,604 in 2000. The earliest residents of Copperas Cove were Nicholas Cooke’s family who migrated from Tennessee in 1881. They settled on a ranch that they named “Cedar Cliff Ranch” which overlooked Cedar Bayou (now known as Copperas Creek). In 1886Nicholas Cooke married Anna Gentry and together they started raising cattle for sale at an auction near Waco before moving east to open a store at what is now Round Rock center mall in 1890known as "Anna's Store".Anna Cooke passed away in 1928 but her husband continued operations until his death 3 years later when he also passed away. In 1930 he married Lillie Hinton and continued operation with three children - Donald (1931-2001), Betty Jo (b 1937)and Darrell (b 1951). Their son Darrell became president and CEO of Cypress Energy Corporation after her death in 2001 In 1954 two new families arrived - John & Myrtle Neely who moved into the house on Cottonwood Drive which had been built by Anna Cooke’s father-in-law prior to her arrival there; and Ethel Cook who moved into #2 cottage which she had purchased earlier that year from Mrs Frye – one of Anna’s sisters living along Highway 6 west of Wichita Falls . Other early settlers include: Mrs Henderson (a former slave) who lived on Third Street opposite courthouse; Mr & Mrs Smith who Truth or Dare would play on their front porch each day; Dr Pepper whom everyone called “Dr Pep” because he sold peppermint extract out front; Oleander Flowers whose garden grew some 150 feet tall adjacent to Post Office building where mail was delivered twice daily during those days
The first white settlers in Copperas Cove were James and Sally Hickey who arrived in 1836. They built a cabin on the beach and named it Hickey's Cove. The town was founded in 1840 when the original post office was established. In 1851, a school was built and in 1855, a Presbyterian church was built. The town continued to grow until 1925 when it merged with nearby Mission Beach to form the current copperas cove city.
