Copperas Cove was founded in 1868 by settlers from Pecos County, Texas. In 1916 Copperas Cove became part of Lubbock County. At the time of its incorporation as a municipality it had a population of 498. The first post office for Copperas Cove was established in 1870 and closed in 1872 due to lack of mail service. The present copper mines were discovered at Copperas Cove in 1903 and production began that year. The Mines Development Company mined copper until 1938 when it merged with United States Steel Corporation. After World War II there were several attempts to reopen the mines but these proved unsuccessful because of low levels of coal being found on site. With rising prices for copper and other minerals over this period, mining stopped completely in 1979 however some small operations continued until recently including one using water-powered equipment which continues today
