Coppell is a town in Randall County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,477 at the 2010 census. The town of Coppell was platted in 1872 by J.D. Coppell and Wm. H. Clements, both of whom were pioneer farmers in what is now Randall County. The first post office was established in 1875, and the name "Coppell" was chosen to honor one of its founders. The town grew rapidly after it became an incorporated municipality in 1903; within ten years it had a population of 5,000 people. The first school opened in 1876 and the first store opened in 1886; two churches were also built soon afterwards. In 1907 Coppell annexed the neighboring towns of Springdale and Palestine; these annexations created a new municipality with a population of 10,000 people which continued to grow until 1959 when it merged with Richardson to form Plano- Richardson–Coppell. In 1960 the city limits were expanded to include portions of Garland and McKinney; this annexation caused a significant decline in population as most residents moved away for economic reasons or left for other cities due to high competition for jobs in Plano- Richardson-Coppell (PRC). However, since PRC has become one of Plano's largest suburbs and continues to grow despite competition from other municipalities within PRC, there has been little impact on local government size or function since then
