Coppell is a town located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The name "Coppell" was given to the community by Colonel James Hogg and his family during their time as ranch hands on the Rancho San Marcos near present day Coppell. The original Post office building still stands today, dating from 1876. In 1891, a post office and store were built in what is now downtown Coppell and remained in operation until 1954 when it was closed due to lack of customers or mail delivery service. A new post office was constructed on US 281 south of I-35W in 1996 which continues to serve as the town's primary postal center today with an additional branch located within blocks of its original location on Elm Street adjacent to UT Austin’s Medical Center Campus. In recent years, downtown Coppell has seen significant growth with additional retail and restaurant options opening up along Elm Street including several banks and a high school which have all helped fuel population growth over the last few decades; however, many residents continue to rely on US 281 for transportation services and shopping opportunities around town
