Coppell, Texas is a small town in Webb County, Texas. The population was 2,643 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The first settlers in Coppell were James and Nancy Cullum who arrived in 1836. The town was founded on November 10, 1881 by J.C. Smith with the help of his three sons John, Harry and Willis Cullum. In 1902 it became a town district under the jurisdiction of McLennan County and was renamed for Colonel George Haskell Coppell (1824-1913), military general and politician from Louisiana who served as governor of Texas (1898-1900). In 1936, Coppell annexed parts of Farmers Branch to become its own city. On December 1st that year, Mayor Clyde Epps announced that the city would be dissolved because it had not submitted plans for an annexation plan to county commissioners within six months after taking office; this caused some protests from residents who felt they were being forced out of their homes without due process. In 1938, when City Council member Cleta Kilpatrick proposed that the name "Coppell" be used for an agricultural development east of town along I-30 that would include housing and storespace, she stirred up controversy again by using terms such as 'ghetto' or 'Negro village'. Kilpatrick lost her seat on council shortly thereafter after admitting she had fabricated evidence to support her claim that she had been insulted by black citizens during a campaign stop in nearby Arlington Heights In 1984–1985 two abandoned oil wells were dynamited near the downtown area leaving a large hole in the ground which still stands today - one mile west of where Coppell once stood
